Vasili Shukhaev

Russian artist, painter and drawer, one of the most distinctive representatives of the neoclassic at the spirit of the ‘World of the Arts’.

In 1906 graduated from the Stroganov Arts and Industrial School majoring in caulking and entered the Saint-Petersburg Arts Academy, where studied under D.N. Kardovsky. After getting the Academy board and lodging (1912) went for the trip by Italy (1913-1914).

Was close to the historical-retrospective trend of the ‘World of the Arts’, not having been, nevertheless, the official member of that. Author of portraits, landscapes, still-lives, mythological and genre scenes stylized for antiquity.

  • Painted the Saint Nikolai Cathedral in Bari, Italy, (architect A.V. Chussev, 1910-1913), worked as a books illustrator, magazine caricaturist and the cinema artist.

    In 1921-1935 was living in France, heading the Studio jointly with A.E. Yakovlev. In 1935 came back to the USSR, where got the personal Studio at the Leningrad Arts Academy.

    Participated in the designing of the interiors for the Moscow Lenin Library. Was arrested in 1937, ‘by suspicion in espionage’, having passed 10 years in the Magadan exile, where was designing the plays of the local Music and Drama Theater. Later on after rehabilitatation, was teaching at the Tbilissi Arts Academy. The personal exhibition of V.Ya. Shukhaev was held in 1954.

    His works are kept at the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, The State Literature Museum and many others.
