Sergei Sudeikin

Sergei Yuryevich Sudeikin was a Russian painter and graphic artist, theatrical painter and graphic artist. In 1897-1909 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, From 1909-1911 he studied at the St.Petersburg Academy of Arts with D.Kardovski.

Exhibition activity began with participation in the "Scarlet Rose", held in Saratov (1904). On the advice of his close friends, Mikhail Kuzmin and Sergei Diaghilev, he exhibited his work at the Paris Autumn Salon in 1906. He was one of the organizers of the exhibition "Blue Rose" in 1907, as well as one of the founding members of the revived "World of Art" in 1910. His graphic works were published in the magazines "Libra", "Apollon, Satirikon and New Satirikon. The most vivid talent of the artist manifested itself in the theatrical-decorative works.

He was a set designer in an artistic cafe "Stray Dog" in 1911 and in a theatre cabaret "Raval of Comedians. In 1912-1913 he took part in the Diaghilev Russian Seasons in Paris, He performed sets and costumes for the ballets "The Red Mask" by N. Cherepnin. and F. Schmidt's The Tragedy of Salome.

After the October Revolution he left for the Crimea, then for Tiflis, where he designed the literary café "Khimerioni" and "Rook of Argonauts", from where he went to France.

In Paris, he worked as a scenographer for N. Baliev's cabaret "The Bat". In 1922 he went on tour to the USA with this troupe, where he remained. He was art-director of many performances in "The metropolitan-Opera, in the productions of Leonid Myasin, Mikhail Fokin and Dmitry Balanchine. Collaborated with Hollywood, decorating films. Exhibited his works at various exhibitions in museums and galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, etc.

His works are in the collections of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Museum of Fine Arts in San Francisco and many other major museum and private collections in Russia, Europe and the United States.
